General Information
The Lionel No. 701 0-4-0 Electric Locomotive was introduced in 1915 and was issued through 1916. The No. 701 Electric Locomotive was based on the New York Central S electric locomotives. The No. 701 was the mid-sized version of the four electric locomotives issued by Lionel as part of the 700 Series of electric locomotives. This locomotive was included as a component of many mid-sized early passenger and freight prewar sets.
The No. 701 Electric Locomotive measures 7 3/4-inches in length. The locomotives have a single low pedestal headlight, decorative bell, Y-shape stanchions, and early hook and slot couplers. The No. 701 locomotive had no manual reverse and ran in one direction only. The “701” and “New York Central” herald were rubber stamped in gold on the sides of the locomotive cab. These stampings were weak and are often partially or completely missing from handling and wear. All of the locomotives were issued in dark green with red trim around the windows.
Variations of the No. 701 Electric Locomotives include changes to the pick-up assembly and motor. The first locomotives had gold painted ventilators.
Lionel also issued a special No. 732 Electric Locomotive in 1915 for the Quaker Oats Company. This locomotive was identical to 1915 version of the No. 701 Locomotive, except that the sides of the cab were stamped “732” and “Quaker”. This locomotive is extremely scarce.
