General Information
The Lionel No. 1701 Streamlined Coach, No. 1702 Streamlined Observation, and No. 1703 Streamlined Front End Streamlined Coach Passenger Cars were introduced in 1935 and were issued through 1937. The Nos. 1701, 1702 and 1703 Streamlined Passenger Cars were included in Lionel Junior low end sets. They were typically paired with Lionel No. 1700(E) Streamlined Locomotives, but they were also offered with several low end steam locomotives. They were also included in a number of uncataloged or “Special” sets.
The Nos. 1701, 1702, and 1703 Streamlined Passenger Cars vary in length. The No. 1701 Streamlined Coach measures 9-inches in length (including the vestibule), the No. 1702 Streamlined Observation measures 10 1/2-inches in length (including the vestibule), and the No. 1703 Streamlined Front End Coach measures 9 1/2-inches in length. The cars are not numbered and all have a “Lionel Lines” plate on the sides. The Nos. 1701, 1702, and 1703 Streamlined Passenger Cars are not articulated as the cars each have two complete trucks. However, the cars have connecting vestibules to give the train a streamlined appearance. The cars are not illuminated. All of the cars have nickel journals.
Variations of the Nos. 1701, 1702, and No. 1703 Streamlined Passenger Cars are generally limited to the color combination and use of a chrome finish on portions of some of the cars. In addition, the sides of the passenger cars came in either fluted or smooth stampings.
