Lionel No. 656 Cattle Cars

General Information

The Lionel No. 656 Cattle Cars were introduced in 1935 and were issued through 1942. The No. 656 Cattle Cars always had manual couplers. The No. 656 Cattle Cars measure 6 1/2-inches in length. The cattle cars had contrasting colors for the body and roof. The frame was always black. The cars had sliding doors that opened and have a handle in the center. The door guides on the early cattle cars matched the roof color. For the later cars, the door guides matched the body color. Early cattle cars have metal plates to identify the number and “Lionel Lines”. The later cattle cars have rubber stamped lettering. All of the No. 656 Cattle Cars have nickel trim.

Variations of the No. 656 Cattle Cars include different body, door and roof color; nickel or black journals; and metal identification plates in nickel or rubber stamping. Early cattle cars have latch couplers. Later cattle cars have late style manual box couplers.
