Lionel No. 629, 630 Passenger Cars
General Information
The Lionel No. 629 Pullman and No. 630 Observation Passenger Cars were introduced in 1924 and were issued through 1935. The No. 629 and No. 630 shared the same body with the No. 529 and No. 530 passenger cars and were the smallest of the passenger cars issued by Lionel during the Classic Period. These passenger cars were included as components of many smaller low end or entry level passenger sets.
The No. 629 and 630 Passenger Cars measure 6 3/4-inches in length. Except as noted below, all of the cars have four wheels with the axles connected directly to the frame of the car. The sides of the cars have a single metal insert, painted a contrasting color, to create the doors, window inserts, and identification of the car number and type. Many of the car have a thin blue celluloid strip in the upper portion of the windows. The cars are not illuminated.
Variations of the No. 629 and No. 630 Passenger Cars include changes to the body color, insert color, and journals. All of the cars have black frames. The cars were initially offered with hook and slot couplers, but most have latch couplers. In 1935, Lionel issued the No. 629 and No. 630 Passenger Cars with different frames and four wheel trucks. These cars were components of a Special Set sold through Sears & Roebuck stores.
