No. 96 PASSENGER OUTFIT, 1925
This Lionel O gauge No. 96 passenger outfit was only produced in 1925. The outfit contents include a No. 153 locomotive, two No. 603 Pullmans and a No. 604 observation car. The locomotive is dark green with nickel trim, strap headlights and hook couplers. It is unusual as it has two headlights instead of the normal headlight and bell. There is no evidence that this locomotive ever had a bell. The cars are painted orange, have maroon doors and windows, combination latch couplers and pickup rollers for interior lighting. They have rubber stamped lettering with the car numbers on the ends and the Lionel Corporation lettering on the car bottom. This outfit came with the original Lionel instruction sheet and lubrication label along with Jefferson transformer instruction sheets even though Lionel never sold any outfit with a Jefferson transformer. This box has original dividers to protect the cars in the outfit. Often these are missing from the outfit box.

The (b) set is differentiated from the 241E(a) version by having the 263T tender instead of the 260T tender. Passenger cars are two tone blue with six-wheel trucks and the tender also has six-wheel trucks.

No. 160 PASSENGER OUTFIT
1920
This Lionel O gauge No. 160 passenger outfit was produced in 1920. The outfit contents include a No. 150 locomotive and two No. 600 Pullman cars. The locomotive and cars were maroon with gold stamped lettering and hook couplers. An OCC track section with soldered lock on was supplied with this outfit. What makes this common outfit extremely rare is the outfit box. The box did not come with a top label and the end label shows a boy in an engineer’s hat. This boy only appears in the 1920 catalogue folder which dates this box to 1920. A copy of the 1920 catalogue folder is shown below. Other early prewar collectors know of only two other boxes like this in existence, one of which is a freight outfit. The absence of a top label could be due to Lionel temporarily running out of labels but nobody has an explanation as to why this different end label was printed and in such a limited quantity. If anyone has any additional information about this box, please let me know.

No. 162 PASSENGER OUTFIT 1919
Lionel O gauge No. 162 passenger outfits were produced from 1917 to 1923. The outfit shown can be dated to 1919 since it is labeled The Lionel Corporation not Lionel Manufacturing Co. It also has the Uncle Sam trademark and patriotic poem which were added during the World War 1 years. The outfit contents include a No. 152 locomotive, a No. 602 Baggage car and a No. 601 Pullman all painted dark green with gold rubber stamped lettering and hook couplers. The cars have lithographed wood grain window frames and doors and no interior lighting. The cars are stamped NEW YORK CENTRAL LINES above the windows while the mail car number is stamped on either side of the doors and the Pullman numbers are stamped on the car ends. These later cars have MADE IN THE U.S.A. and THE LIONEL CORPORATION NEW YORK stamped on the bottom. An OCC track section with soldered lock on and a No. 88 battery rheostat are supplied with this outfit. During this time frame Lionel used poor quality ink to stamp the outfit numbers on boxes and a lot of these numbers have worn off over time.

No. 293 FREIGHT OUTFIT, 1929
This Lionel O gauge No. 293 freight outfit was produced in 1929. The outfit contents include a No. 252 light olive locomotive, a No. 803 peacock hopper car, a No. 804 aluminum tank car, a No. 805 pea green and orange box car and a No. 807 red and peacock caboose. The locomotive has brass trim, disk wheels and latch couplers. The headlight is a homemade replacement for the cast headlight. The cars have nickel journals, brass trim and latch couplers. Lionel must have had leftover outfit boxes as this one is dated for 1927 (see photo). The locomotive box is labeled for light orange but the No. 252 was not made in this color until 1933.
